Forty-two SBM Atlantia Managers celebrated a major milestone in SBMA history on May 17, 2010 – the award of the Bronze Level Manager Certification in The 4 Disciplines of Execution (4DX). This was truly an award that was earned, not won. Most importantly, it was achieved through the support and commitment of their respective teams.
These are the first of an expanding group of Managers and talented professionals at SBMA who since January 2010, have been dedicated to translating into action at the operational level how to zero in on the Wildly Important Goals of the organization, in the face of the whirlwind – their everyday work. Whilst focused on the Middle to Senior Managers at the operational level, the investment in and support of the implementation process has been championed by the Executive Team. The Execution on Strategy process has been viewed as a natural, yet deliberate progression of the strategic OD work undertaken by SBMA in 2009 focusing on creating a one-company culture with,
•Improved leadership capabilities
•Enhanced accountability, and
•Stronger organizational and individual performance.
In 2009, SBMA’s Mission, Vision, Values, Strategic Framework and Organizational and Departmental Goals were formulated by the Executive Management Team. These became the foundation for the line of sight between strategy and operational implementation for the whole organization.
The Certification Award Ceremony saw Managers from virtually all key department areas (including two Directors and one Vice President) receiving their Awards and Certificates from the SBMA Organizational Development Leader and Champion of the Execution process, Ms. Denise Mannix. A brief but heart felt speech of congratulations was made by FranklinCovey’s representative, Ms. Jennifer Huey who acknowledged the significance of what had been achieved to date in implementing The 4 Disciplines of Execution. Ms. Huey also confirmed SBMA’s complete ownership and customization of the Execution process in order to make the inroads already being witnessed in performance, management capability and cultural change.
A number of critical milestones and criteria were required of Managers to successfully achieve their Certification. The Certification journey demanded their accountability and that of their teams, during a period of intense activity in the SBMA business. This effort is to be ramped up as performance outcomes and results continue to be driven through the Execution on Strategy implementation. More managers, professionals and VPs are being added to the ranks of the Bronze Level Manager Certification pool within the next few months, whilst those who have already achieved their Certification, progress with new measures and requirements towards Silver Level Manager Certification.
All agree that the initial achievement of the 4DX Certification by a significant number of SBMA Managers is a watershed moment in SBMA history. The hard yards and continuing efforts of these 4DX Managers and those who follow, represent SBMA’s commitment to change and improve. SBMA’s Managers are not just doing the ‘same but better’. Importantly, they are doing ‘different and better’. There is no doubt that SBMA has really taken Einstein’s ‘definition of insanity’ to heart!

Steve Leverette has been recognized by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) for a paper that helped shape current industry practices. Leverette was selected to receive the ASCE OTC Hall of Fame Award, an award initiated by ASCE in 2005 to recognize those technical papers, presented in the early years of OTC, which provided our industry with innovation, vision, direction and lasting impact on the design, construction or installation of the offshore infrastructure. Eight papers, including Leverette's paper 'Evaluation of Hutton TLP Response to Environmental Loads', were chosen by ASCE for the Hall of Fame honor based on the fact that they were presented at OTC conferences thirty or more years ago, yet they still form the core of current practice worldwide.
SBM Atlantia's FourStar™ technology has been recognized as the best technical innovation at one of the industry's most prestigious gatherings.
The paper, "Battered Column TLP & Semisubmersible Solutions for Deepwater Applications Offshore Australia", presented by Dr. Neil Williams, Product Development Manager, at the Deep Offshore Technology (DOT) Conference in Perth, Australia, received the DOT 2008 George Murray Award for Best Technical Innovation, as voted by the event advisory board.
The presentation detailed the development of the FourStar™ hull concept, and the application of this technology to a typical deepwater gas field offshore Australia. Work on this technology, for both TLP and semisubmersible applications, has been ongoing for the last two years, during which both wet-tree and dry-tree solutions have been developed for a range of water depths, payloads and environmental conditions. Both stand-alone systems and wellhead platforms used in conjunction with an FPSO have been investigated.
The award-winning presentation was one of five papers provided by SBM during the three-day event hosted by Woodside.
The Quality Management System international standard is applicable to technology development, project management, design, engineering, construction management, installation and commissioning, in addition to turnkey delivery, leasing and servicing of offshore floating systems and other engineered solutions for the offshore industry.
In 2003, Atlantia received a Special Citation from Offshore Technology Conference for innovative technology in the development of the Morpeth SeaStar Platform. Special citations are not presented annually; they are awarded only in years when OTC believes that an activity, event, or contribution merits recognition.
